When was the Registry established?
The Registry was established in 2000 by the National Suicide Research Foundation at the request of the Department of Health and Children.
It is funded by the HSE’s National Office for Suicide Prevention.
Why is a National Self-Harm Registry needed?
The Registry records how many self-harm presentations to hospital emergency departments there are each year. It records which groups in the country make the most presentations, when the presentations happen, what type of self-harm is involved, and which areas have the highest rates.
By providing this information, the Registry helps improve services for people who self-harm and informs prevention efforts.
